7. A few months later, Cotton Candy (billed as Al Hirt) peaked at # 3 AC/# 15 Hot on RCA Victor b/w Walkin' which reached # Hot "Bubbling Under." Then, that same summer, Sugar Lips also made it to # 3 AC as well as # 30 Hot b/w Poupee Brisée (Broken Doll) on RCA Victor , followed in the fall by Up Above My Head (I Hear /5(7).

8. Al Hirt's debut with RCA is generally Dixieland-oriented and much better than what would follow. Hirt is explosive on such numbers as "I Love Paris," "Jazz Me Blues," "Cornet Chop Suey" and "Christopher Columbus," but the renditions are quite brief (all under 3½ minutes) and were clearly recorded with hopes of radio airplay. Trombonist Jack DeLaney and clarinetist Pee Wee Spitelera are fine.

9. Yes, Al Hirt was primarily an album artist but the charting singles were the ones that mainly brought him to the attention of the public at large and helped SELL those albums. And besides, who can say definitively that the other 17 sides here, which came from his many LPs, were the ones that were favorites of all the selections on each LP /5(7).
